I løpet av ganske få år har resirkulerende akvakultursystemer (RAS) blitt det dominerende teknologivalget når smolt- og postsmolt-anlegg skal bygges eller utvikles. Den kontinuerlige driften og den begrensede vannutskiftingen i disse anleggene gjør at det kan bygge seg opp organisk materiale på overflaten og i rørkretsene.
