Huon Aquaculture has awarded a major contract to Pure Salmon Technology AS for the design, supply, and installation of a new land-based smolt facility in Tasmania, subject to regulatory approvals.
The project marks a significant step in Huon’s ongoing commitment to sustainable aquaculture and operational excellence.
Advanced RAS facility in Tasmania
The new facility will incorporate advanced Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology to support high biosecurity standards, water efficiency, and fish health. Once operational, the facility will enable Huon to grow larger fish on land and produce high-quality smolt.
Designed with operational flexibility in mind, the facility will operate with a high degree of water recirculation and close to zero environmental impact.
“Huon has led the way in Tasmania in investments in recirculating aquaculture systems, and the proposed project will more than double our land-based farming capacity”
— Depha Miedecke, General Manager at Huon Aquaculture
Growing larger fish on land reduces the amount of time our salmon spend in the marine environment and supports stable year-round production. Pending regulatory approvals, we’re looking forward to working with the excellent team at Pure Salmon and local contractors, including electricians and builders, to bring this project to life.
