Pure Salmon Global

Research and Innovation

Building knowledge to support the industry

Constantly improving

Pure Salmon Technology develops technological, contractual, and managerial innovations on a daily basis to offer high added value services to our fish-farming customers, and to fulfil our vision to be a major actor in land-based salmon farming industry.

Integrating R&I in Pure Salmon Technology’s solutions

To rapidly transfer new knowledge to our solutions and deliveries, the R&I group focuses on trouble shooting and risk reduction in RAS, performance optimisation, water quality optimisation and microbiome management as well as fish health and welfare. A substantial R&I effort goes into developing autmation and remote monitoring solutions. Biosecurity in RAS, including cleaning and disinfection procedures, off-flavours control and depuration as well as water oxidation in RAS are further topics directly relevant for the Pure Salmon Technology solutions.

The preferred R&I partner by academic institutions

To meet the global environmental challenges and help our customers move towards sustainable solutions, Pure Salmon Technology engages heavily in research and innovation projects focussed on the Norwegian aquaculture industry. This includes projects such as CtrlAqua SFI, RASbiome (programme ERA-NET BlueBio COFUND), Fastwell (programme HAVBRUK 2), RAS 4.0 (collaborative project to meet societal and industry-related challenges, Research Council of Norway).

When research meets education

In cooperation with different research institutions and universities we have co-supervised a number of master theses within aquaculture in general and RAS in particular. Among these valuable contributions we can outline:

Salinity acclimation strategies for nitrifying bioreactors in recirculating aquaculture systems. PhD 2021
Solid wastes properties of a commercial recirculating aquaculture system. MSc 2022
Development of nutrient mass balance in a commercial recirculation aquaculture system with focus on Nitrogen and Phosphorous. MSc 2023
Dynamics or particles during Atlantic salmon startfeeding period: comparison between recirculating aquaculture system and conventional flow through. MSc 2023.

Many of the students have later been employed by us or have made their career in leading salmon farming companies. The results from all the different theses are used by our engineers and designers to refine our solutions.

Into the future - RAS digitalisation

Pure Salmon Technology has been and wants to remain one of the leading actors in development of digital tools and innovations for RAS. Our goal for RAS digitalisation is to transform data to information and information to knowledge. We work to improve and widen the data collection, not only operational and process parameters, but also fish specific data like appetite, biomass, physical characteristics and welfare indicatiors. This will include a wide range of technologies including camera technology, AI, and novel sensors and measuring techniques. Our NJORD cloud based control system with a variety of modules such as NJORD feeding, is continuosly improved to be the best platform for the digital RAS solutions.

We want RAS digitalisation to be a powerful tool to benefit both the farms and the farmers. Integrated data collection and automated reporting eliminates unneccessary data entry. Smart algorithms and data treatment based on deep RAS knowledge give the farmers powerful tools. Automated and controlled operation based on relevant and trustworthy data reduces the risk and need for man power both during steady operation and during special operations like fish transfer.

Pure Salmon Technology is an active partner in R&D projects developing digital RAS solutions. One example is “RAS 4.0” for the period 2021-2025 which is driven by the hypothesis that the optimisation and control of production conditions based on biological drivers in RAS will lead to improved welfare and performance of Atlantic salmon.
